Tips on choosing the right dive center for your Dive Professional Education

Posted by:

As a diver, you probably would have been to a lot of places to dive and for some you might also have been going around to different dive centers to do different courses.

The day comes when you decide that perhaps I would want to embark  onto becoming a dive professional. Many questions would pop up when deciding which dive center you would want to start your dive professional education with.

“Would I want to do it locally or do I want to do it overseas?”

“ Which center should I do it with?”

Here are some things that you would want to consider before signing up for your dive professional course:

  • Why do I want to become a dive professional? Whether it would be for knowledge, interest, or working as a dive professional.
  • Am I going to be actively involved being a dive profession? If so, you really would want to consider doing it with a center that you are comfortable with and see yourself progressing with the center.
  • Do I want to be an instructor eventually? If yes, think about doing it with a PADI 5* IDC center, making your transition smoother.
  • How much time can I commit to when taking this course? If you are working full time and do not wish to take time off, you can consider doing it part time or even full time with a local dive center. If you can take at least 2 weeks off work, going overseas to complete it may be an option too. The most important thing is what do you really want to gain from doing this course? Is it just going to be , I’m now a PADI Divemaster and get pro discounts on scuba equipment and trips or really represent yourself and proud to be a PADI Divemaster.
  • How much are you expecting to pay for your course. If you are comparing prices you would need to make sure that it is apple to apple as in everything in the course that dive center A to B to C are the same. Eg number of classes, ratios, pool sessions, theories, out sea sessions etc.
  • Is the instructor that you are doing the course with up to date with the curriculums? There was a recent update on the IDC materials for IDC Staff Instructors to Course Directors to attend where both our Course Directors Martin & E Lin had just completed in Thailand early October 2019 and they are all excited to roll out the updated IDC in their next IDC!
